Doing business is all about trust. Every business transaction is a promise, an agreement. If you pay me X, you will get Y. In order for the person to make this agreement (and pay you moolah), they need to trust that you will do what you say you’re going to. No one wants to be swindled! Larger transactions require even more confidence and trust. This is why actively working to build trust through your website and online presence is so critical. Here I’ll share with you seven methods for how to build trust with customers through your website and online.
Demonstrate You Understand Their Problem
There’s nothing more eye-opening than when someone says exactly what you’ve been thinking. First, identify the biggest problems that your customer has that you can help them solve. Use their exact words and language to demonstrate you understand their problem and that you can help them solve it. This shows empathy for their situation and positions you as the expert guide to transform their lives for the better.
Proof of Results
Show examples of how you’ve successfully helped people solve this problem in the past. These could be portfolio examples or case studies. Tell the story of what problems or challenges the customer had and how you helped them overcome those challenges. If you can make the results quantifiable, even better. For example, after working with us, their inquiries increase by 30%. Or we were able to increase their campus diversity by 1/3.
Social Proof
Share reviews or testimonials of people who were happy they paid you money to solve their problems. When sharing reviews, keep it short and sweet. It’s totally okay to only share a few short sentences of a lengthy review. Or you can highlight one section of the review by making it larger or bolded.
Establish Credibility
There are lots of ways to establish credibility and it depends a lot on your type of business. Some examples are awards, certifications, press features, or featuring logos of impressive past clients or users. Get creative with it! It could be ‘high-quality products we use’, ‘brands we trust’, etc.
Humanize the Brand
It’s important to build rapport with your potential clients, especially if you’re a service provider. Sharing a bit about you, your story, and what you believe in allows them to find common interests and connect with you on an emotional level. You love dogs? They love dogs too! And it also works in the reverse. It’s not a bad thing to repel potential clients who don’t believe in the same things you do.
Get creative with it! Show your silly side. We’re all human, after all.
Look Legit With Professional Design and Imagery
Whether your potential customers realize it or not, they are making assumptions about your business based on their past experiences with other brands and companies. If your brand, website, and imagery look amateur, it gives the impression that your service or product is amateur too. Yikes! It’s hard to trust an amateur, in fact, it can sometimes be a gamble.
When you have a professional, consistent design across all online applications, it subconsciously says “we’re professional, we’re experienced, we provide a high-quality product/service, and you can trust us”.
Be Upfront About Pricing
The less you hide information from potential clients, the faster they will trust you. It’s like in any relationship, honesty is key. At the very least, give them a ballpark of what they can expect to spend. This will help them feel confident that they can afford to work with you before inquiring. And you won’t waste time chatting with potential clients that aren’t the right fit budget-wise.
